Adding Geri-Fit Classes

I’m now certified as a Geri-Fit instructor. Next week I’ll be teaching the first Geri-Fit class at the Allen Eiry Center in Tiffin Ohio. Mondays & Wednesdays 1:15-2:00 p.m. it’s an 8 week program with 2 classes per week. If interested contact the Allen Eiry Center to register or contact me for more information  (contact info below). Maximum 25 students for the first session. You have to be over 50 years old to become an Allen Eiry member ($25/year) and the Geri-Fit Program is $80 ($5/class) for the 16 classes. Wear comfortable cloths, bring a set of 2-pound dumbbells and water. Plan to do only what works for you as we build strength and so much more.

What is the Geri-Fit program?
Geri-Fit® is a tier III (highest level) evidence-based health promotion program for older adults that helps to rebuild strength that’s been lost through the aging process.  Any older adult, regardless of their age or fitness level, can participate.

The Geri-Fit® program requires a set of light dumbbell weights, a sturdy chair, band, and water to drink during the workout. There’s no dancing, choreography or floor work and both men and women can enroll. Geri-Fit is challenging, effective and very safe to do. Participants will literally turn back the hands of time each time they do the workout and they will marvel at the results this program has to offer.

The workout is considered a “progressive resistance exercise program” meaning that once the participants have built up enough strength and endurance using a set of 2 or 3-pound dumbbells, they can graduate to using heavier dumbbells weights in order to become even stronger. In essence, Geri-Fit is bodybuilding for seniors! A typical Geri-Fitter will work up to using a set of 4 or 5-pound dumbbells within a year’s time.  The Geri-Fit exercise program also incorporates stretching, stability and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking.

In addition to the wonderful strength gains that are accomplished with the program, older adults will also see an improvement in balance and functional capacity which will help lessen their chance of falls. They’ll also see an improvement in activities of daily living such as carrying groceries, being able to get in and out of a car, standing up from a seated position, picking up a pet, walking up and down stairs, and just being able to walk freely again.
