Aging and Exercise, Part 2

Benefits of Exercise: Lowers risks for things like heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, high blood pressure, obesity, prevents muscle deterioration, Alzheimer's and dementia. They say moderate to intense exercise can slow brain aging by as much as 10 years. I'll take that! Regular exercise that is good for the heart and cardiovascular system is also good for the mind preventing or reverses the brain from deteriorating. So it's great for your body and mind and you carry the benefits throughout your day.

Try not to sit as much and at least do some walking. Standing and walking are both healthy and that is why I tell my students to stand more. I bought my wife a standup desk for her work and she loves it. She has the option to stand or sit throughout her workday. This desk is great for health and helps with better posture. Varidesk

When you commit to doing exercise every day even if it's only a few minutes it builds on itself incrementally and keeps your momentum going. Being physically active is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. After exercise when the adrenaline rush is over you can then enjoy a calm mind and relaxed body.

For those that are healthy and have been exercising, high intensity interval training helps maximize the health benefits of exercise.

If you're confined to a wheelchair or bed-fast you can still exercise with gentle movements that will help with circulation, digestion and respiration.

Try not to approach your exercise as work, look at it as an investment in yourself. I know some people spend countless hours keeping their home spotless and yard manicured, that's all great. But, it's time to invest in yourself so you can enjoy the other things in your life while feeling good.  You only get one go at it, make it the best you can so you don't look back and wished you had done it different.

Think about different ways you can incorporate Physical Activity like taking stairs instead of the elevator, biking or walking instead of driving and Exercise which is a planed regular program like Yoga, pilates, jogging and aerobic classes to improve the quality of your life now and for years to come.
